Here Comes the Bride

December 2019: A Word From Dr. Stanley

What bride-to-be isn’t excited about her own wedding? The anticipation of sharing life with her beloved makes it difficult to wait for that special day. And if you’re a believer in Jesus Christ, you will be at the most magnificent wedding of all time—not as an observer but as the one getting married!

Like all biblical promises, the union of Christ and the church is a certainty.

The Bible’s names for the church, like “family of God” and “body of Christ,” reveal how tenderly God views His followers. And one of the most intimate titles is “bride of Christ.”

It was the Jewish custom of Jesus’ day that after betrothal, the bridegroom would go back to his father’s home to build an addition. When it was finished, he would come for his bride to take her there for the wedding. This is what John 14:1-3 is describing: Jesus tells His disciples He’s going back to His Father’s house to prepare a place—and then He’ll return for them so they can be with Him forever.

What a beautiful picture: Our loving Bridegroom will one day return to take us home to heaven. And like all biblical promises, the union of Christ and the church is a certainty. Yet so many people dismiss this truth, since Jesus has been gone for about 2,000 years and life continues on as usual.

How about you—does Christ’s return seem like a far-off event with little or no impact on your daily life, or is it the blessed hope to which you cling? In either case, I pray that this month’s devotions will increase your expectation and longing for our Bridegroom to come.

What happens to my notes

1 Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.

2 In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.

3 If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.
